The decision to exit ECOWAS stemmed partly from concerns that France was interfering with ECOWAS operations and not adequately supporting efforts against jihadist groups. Despite this, Diop affirmed Mali’s openness to collaborating with neighboring countries and other regional organizations. Emphasizing the irreversibility of Mali’s withdrawal, Diop stated, “Our heads of state were very clear…we must stop looking in the rear-view mirror.”

Regarding the creation of a confederation, Diop clarified that this was a preliminary step towards eventually forming a federation among the three states. ECOWAS has set a one-year deadline for their departure, but the Sahel nations intend to exit sooner. This decision raises concerns about its impact on regional trade and travel. Diop warned that reintroducing visas would validate their concerns about ECOWAS resorting to old methods of coercion.
