In a related development, the House of Representatives has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to suspend the enforcement of the Samoa Agreement until all contentious clauses are comprehensively reviewed and clarified. This decision followed a motion of urgent national importance proposed by 88 members.

During the deliberations, House member Aliyu Madaki highlighted concerns about the “gender equality” clause, cautioning that it could potentially challenge the country’s moral values.

Furthermore, the House has assigned its relevant committees to scrutinize the disputed terms of the agreement. The Samoa Agreement, recently signed between the Federal Government and the European Union, has sparked controversy due to apprehensions over its perceived implications for LGBT rights recognized by the Nigerian government.

Online, many individuals expressed dissent, referencing Nigeria’s laws against same-sex marriages and homosexual relationships enacted in 2014 during the presidency of Goodluck Jonathan.
