Five people have reportedly lost their lives in a road accident along the Warrake-Afuze road in Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State.

The tragic incident involved a campaign vehicle belonging to the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Monday Okpebholo, and a private silver Camry Sedan. According to sources, the victims were returning from a burial ceremony when the crash occurred.

One of the deceased has been identified as Emmanuel Edionwe. Four of the victims’ bodies were taken to the Edo State University, Uzaurie Mortuary in Etsako West Local Government Area.

Eyewitnesses claim the accident happened when the campaign vehicle collided with the victims’ car as they attempted to negotiate a sharp bend. Many attributed the crash to reckless driving.

A relative of Emmanuel Edionwe, speaking anonymously, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Emmanuel as a kind and easygoing person.

“We are heartbroken beyond words. Emmanuel and his friends were in the silver Camry. We were informed that five of them died after the head-on collision with the APC campaign vehicle. One person remains in critical condition and is receiving treatment at the hospital,” the relative said.

Emmanuel Edionwe reportedly succumbed to his injuries at the Irrua Specialist Hospital (ISH) after being transferred for further care. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) evacuated the bodies, with four of the victims dying immediately and one passing away the following day.

However, the Edo State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Matthew Cyril Zango, confirmed the accident but stated that only two fatalities had been recorded, contrary to reports circulating on social media. He clarified that the APC campaign convoy was traveling from Auchi to Afuze, and one of the vehicles, carrying musical equipment, collided with the Camry.

“Two people returning from a burial ceremony lost their lives in the crash,” Zango said, adding that further updates would be provided.
