The Delta State Police Command has arrested two women and several vigilante members for allegedly brutalizing a 20-year-old truck pusher, Abubakar Yusuf, before cutting off his finger and setting him ablaze based on false theft allegations.

The incident occurred in Sapele on the evening of Thursday, September 12, 2024. Yusuf was accused of stealing ₦400,000 from a lockup store at the Sapele Market owned by a woman identified as Mrs. Onoriode.

According to reports, after the accusations were made, Yusuf was beaten severely by a mob, which included vigilante members, before being doused in fuel and set on fire. However, before the situation worsened, a relative of Mrs. Onoriode confessed to having taken and hidden the money.

One source from the Sapele Main Market stated, “Onoriode accused Abubakar of stealing her money. She called in the vigilante, and they brutally beat him before setting him on fire.”

Another market source confirmed that shortly after Yusuf’s arrest, Onoriode’s sister admitted to taking the money for safekeeping. Despite this, Abubakar was handed over to a local chemist for treatment after being released by the vigilante.
