Tony Aziegbemi, Chairman of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, voiced these concerns during a press conference on Friday, calling the impeachment a threat to democracy in the state.
Aziegbemi accused the so-called councillors of impersonation, claiming they lacked the legal authority to execute such an action.
“These individuals are not legitimate councillors of Oredo Local Government. Their actions are illegal and set a dangerous precedent for dictatorship in our state,” he said.
He further called on security agencies to investigate and protect genuine councillors, alleging that some are facing threats.
The PDP caretaker chairman appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, and opinion leaders to intervene and address what he described as an attack on democracy.
“We are drawing the attention of Nigerians and Edolites to the situation in Oredo local government, where individuals who were not elected have impeached the chairman,” he said.
Aziegbemi highlighted that elected councillors have been forced into hiding following threats and attacks on their leader.
“How can the governor allow impostors to claim they have removed the elected officials from the council? People who did not contest elections, nor have certificate of returns, gathered to impeach the council chairman,” he added.
He called on the President, Inspector General of Police, and Director-General of State Security Service to take swift action on this issue, stressing the urgency of addressing it while still possible.
