EFCC Counters Claims Of Manipulating Testimony To Implicate Minister In N109bn Fraud Scandal....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
A detective from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mahmud Tukur, refuted allegations of offering leniency to the former Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris, in exchange for implicating the former Minister of Finance and others.
Idris had asserted before the Federal Capital Territory High Court on February 1, 2024, that he was misled by the EFCC into confessing to the accusations against him. He specifically alleged that the EFCC coerced him, claiming they intended to leverage his testimony to implicate the Minister of Finance and several governors in the misappropriation of derivation funds.
Facing trial alongside Godfrey Akindele, Mohammed Kudu Usman, and Gezawa Commodity Market and Exchange Limited, Idris was charged with 14 counts of embezzlement and breach of trust amounting to N109.5 billion by the EFCC in July 2022.
During the trial-within-trial prompted by objections from Idris’s counsel, Chris Uche (SAN), Tukur, serving as the second prosecution witness, denied any such assurances made by the commission to Idris.
Led by EFCC counsel Oluwaleke Atolagbe, Tukur maintained that all 13 statements involving Idris, including those made with legal representation, were given voluntarily. He disclosed that Idris was interviewed in the presence of his lawyers before issuing 11 statements on separate occasions. Tukur clarified that two of the confessional statements were voluntarily provided, with Idris waiving his right to legal counsel.
Under cross-examination by Uche, Tukur explained the standard procedure employed by the EFCC to obtain statements from suspects. He acknowledged that no invitation letter was sent to Idris after his second statement. Furthermore, Tukur admitted his inability to confirm whether Idris’s statement in Kano on May 10, 2022, was made in the presence of his lawyer, as he was not present at the time.
Regarding the allegation of offering Idris a soft landing, Tukur vehemently denied such assertions, labeling them as “utter falsehood.” He emphasized that he, in his capacity as a unit head, never assured Idris of immunity from prosecution, stressing the seniority of Idris within the civil service.
