Ministers And Other Officials Face Temporary Travel Restriction By Tinubu’s Directive....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

President Bola Tinubu has instituted a three-month ban on public-funded foreign trips for ministers, heads of agencies, and other government officials, effective from April 1, 2024.

In a letter dated March 12, 2024, signed by the Chief of Staff to the president, Femi Gbajabiamila, and addressed to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, the directive was conveyed.

Earlier in January, Tinubu had issued an order to limit the number of individuals accompanying him on both local and foreign trips, stipulating that his delegation should not exceed 25 for domestic travels and 20 for international journeys. Additionally, he mandated that security agents at his destination provide protection, rather than being accompanied by numerous security personnel from Abuja.

This decision followed criticism faced during and after the twenty-eighth Conference of Parties (COP28) in the United Arab Emirates, where approximately 590 Nigerian officials attended. The government clarified that funding was provided for only 422 individuals in the delegation.

The letter enforcing the ban stated, “Mr. President has concerns about the rising cost of travel expenses borne by Ministries, Department and Agencies of Government, as well as the growing need for cabinet members and heads of MDAs to focus on their respective mandates for effective service delivery.”

The directive aims to reduce governance costs, with Tinubu emphasizing the importance of responsible fiscal management amid current economic challenges.

Furthermore, government officials intending to embark on public-funded foreign trips must obtain presidential approval at least two weeks before departure, and such trips must be deemed “absolutely necessary.”

This temporary measure seeks to ensure cost-saving without compromising government functions. Officials are urged to adhere to these guidelines, recognizing the necessity of fiscal prudence in governance.
