Last week, the EFCC invited the ex-minister for questioning regarding the suspected money laundering of N37.1 billion through a contractor, James Okwete, under her watch. Despite the summons, she has yet to appear at the EFCC headquarters in Jabi, Abuja.
The ongoing probe extends to other officials who worked with Umar-Farouk, aiming to gain insights into the ministry’s affairs over the last four years. The investigation gained momentum after the immediate suspension of Halima Shehu, the CEO and national coordinator of the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA), by President Bola Tinubu.
Tinubu appointed Akindele Egbuwalo, the National N-Power program Manager, as acting CEO of NSIPA during the investigative period. The agency, responsible for managing critical programs such as N-Power and Conditional Cash Transfer, falls under the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs.
While the reasons behind Shehu’s suspension remain unclear, sources suggest that the NSIPA boss is also under scrutiny and faced questioning by the EFCC on Tuesday. The unfolding developments highlight the intensification of efforts to address concerns within the ministry and ensure transparency in the management of critical social programs.
