EFCC Steps Up Efforts In Alleged Fraud Case Involving Yahaya Bello And Sirika....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) escalated its efforts to prosecute former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello and former Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, for purportedly embezzling public funds.
Bello, who is currently wanted by the EFCC, faces allegations of siphoning approximately N80 billion from the state’s treasury. The anti-corruption agency seeks to arraign him on 19 counts related to money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation totaling N80.2 billion.
Last week, EFCC operatives attempted to arrest Bello at his Abuja residence. However, their efforts were thwarted by Governor Usman Ododo, who allegedly assisted Bello’s escape using his official vehicle.
Amidst this, conflicting court orders emerged regarding Bello’s arrest. While a Kogi State High Court restrained the EFCC from arresting him, a Federal High Court in Abuja granted the agency permission to do so.
Despite the court order, Bello failed to appear for his scheduled arraignment, prompting EFCC’s counsel to accuse him of intentionally avoiding trial.
EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, expressed determination to prosecute Bello, vowing to resign if necessary. Olukoyede revealed that Bello withdrew $720,000 from government accounts to prepay his child’s school fees through a Bureau de Change operator.
Additionally, Olukoyede disclosed his attempt to invite Bello for questioning, which Bello declined, citing alleged media manipulation against him.
Previously, Bayo Onanuga, spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu, urged Bello to surrender to the EFCC, emphasizing that he had nowhere to evade justice.
In a separate development, EFCC questioned former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika regarding an alleged N8 billion fraud related to the proposed Nigeria Air project. Olukoyede clarified that the investigation covered not only Sirika but also matters concerning the Aviation and Humanitarian Affairs ministries.
The EFCC’s efforts underscore its commitment to combating corruption and holding public officials accountable for financial misconduct.
