A group of sixteen state attorneys-general has approached the Supreme Court, questioning the constitutionality of the EFCC’s creation. They argue that the National Assembly did not comply with Section 12 of the 1999 Constitution, which governs the integration of international treaties into national law.
In a recent interview on Channels Television’s Morning Show, the EFCC reinforced its legal standing, emphasizing that it was established following proper procedures in the National Assembly. EFCC Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwujaren, expressed concern over the timing of this lawsuit amid Nigeria’s pressing corruption challenges. He underscored the EFCC’s crucial role in fighting corruption, recovering billions in misappropriated funds, and prosecuting high-profile cases.
Uwujaren stated, “Given the severe corruption issues in our country, it is alarming that some individuals would challenge the EFCC’s legality in court. What we are witnessing is the response of those feeling the pressure from our efforts, seeking to undermine the commission’s work. They perceive the EFCC as a threat.”
He urged Nigerians to see through the motives behind the lawsuit and to support the commission, asserting that Nigeria’s fight against corruption is untenable without the EFCC.
