During the opening ceremony of the four-day International Conference of the African Biblical Leadership Initiative in Abuja, Obasanjo remarked that Churchill was often overlooked in his time but ultimately received the “Man of the Century” award later in life. He noted that few leaders are recognized while alive, highlighting Gowon as one of them.

Obasanjo stated, “Only a few leaders are appreciated in their lifetime. General Gowon, I envy you for being recognized while you are still here. That is a testament to God’s grace in your life. You are like Winston Churchill, who fought valiantly for the British Empire but was often criticized and even voted out of Parliament. Yet, before his death, he was celebrated as the ‘Man of the Century.’”

He further reflected, “Many leaders, including our Lord Jesus Christ and most of his disciples, were not honored in their lifetimes and faced unworthy ends. If a leader seeks praise and admiration from people, they are bound to be disappointed. However, God looks after leaders. Experts indicate that there are currently 58 wars worldwide, involving 92 countries directly or indirectly, yet they claim there is no Third World War. So, what should we do?
