Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at modernizing Nigeria’s immigration services, saving the government significant funds through automation. In an interview on ‘Unfiltered: The Big Interview,’ hosted by O’tega ‘The Tiger’ Ogra and released recently, Tunji-Ojo outlined plans to automate passport applications, introduce passport home delivery services, and implement advanced passenger information systems at airports.
Since taking office last August, the ministry has swiftly addressed challenges, including clearing a backlog of over 204,000 passports within three weeks. The automation of the application process alone has already saved approximately N600 million annually by eliminating manual archiving costs.
Additionally, the ministry is set to launch a home delivery service for passports imminently and has enhanced border control with an Advanced Passenger Information system. This system allows for pre-screening of travelers, bolstering national security by preventing entry to individuals with dubious backgrounds.
Looking forward, Tunji-Ojo aims to streamline the visa application process, promising e-visa issuance within 48 hours to enhance efficiency and transparency. These reforms are designed not only to tighten security measures but also to facilitate legitimate travel and promote Nigeria as a welcoming destination.
Overall, these initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to improving national security and fostering a conducive environment for business and tourism in Nigeria.
