Eid-el-Maulud: First Lady Calls For Peace, Unity Among Muslims
Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has explained why she turned down an offer to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2027 general elections.
Yesufu said she declined the ticket because she was unwilling to compromise her principles or integrity in pursuit of political office.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the activist made the disclosure during an interview with Symfoni TV, where she explained that some political offers presented to her came with conditions she was not prepared to accept.
Yesufu maintained that political power should not be pursued at all costs, stressing that she would rather remain outside government than accept an arrangement that could force her to go against her convictions.
She said the decision was influenced by several issues involving principles, adding that she would not accept promises or conditions that could compromise her commitment to Nigeria.
The activist also stated that she was not desperate to become president or hold any political position, insisting that she would not make promises simply to secure political power.
Her decision followed a disclosure by NDC national leader Seriake Dickson that he and the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, had offered Yesufu the House of Representatives ticket.
Despite the offer, Yesufu chose not to accept the opportunity, maintaining that political participation should not require her to abandon her values or make commitments she would be unable to fulfil.
Her comments have continued to attract attention as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly over the role of prominent activists and public figures in the emerging political landscape.
