U-20 Women’s World Cup: Poland Denies Falconets Captain Visa

Nigeria’s Falconets could be without captain Joy Igbokwe when they begin their campaign at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland after the midfielder reportedly encountered difficulties with her visa.

Igbokwe, who plays for Nasarawa Amazons, was expected to lead the Nigerian side at the tournament following her important contribution during the team’s successful qualification campaign.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the development has raised concerns over the captain’s availability as the competition draws closer. However, details surrounding the reported visa problem remain unclear.

Neither the Nigeria Football Federation nor Igbokwe has publicly confirmed that her visa application was rejected. It is also yet to be established whether the issue is related to documentation, processing delays or another administrative matter.

The potential absence of Igbokwe would represent a setback for the Falconets, considering her leadership role and familiarity with the squad. She captained the team during crucial matches in the qualifying campaign and played a significant part in securing Nigeria’s place at the global tournament.

Reports also indicate that Igbokwe may not be the only Falconets player facing travel-related difficulties, with several members of the squad allegedly experiencing challenges obtaining the required visas. Their identities and the specific nature of the reported issues have not been officially disclosed.

The situation could force head coach Moses Aduku and his technical team to make late adjustments to the squad if the affected players are unable to secure travel clearance in time.

Despite the off-field concerns, the Falconets have continued preparations for the tournament. The team recorded a 10-0 victory over Abuja-based Sunshine FC in a preparatory match in July as part of their build-up to the competition.

Nigeria qualified for the World Cup after overcoming Rwanda, Senegal and Malawi during the African qualifying series, extending the country’s remarkable record of appearing at every edition of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup since its inception in 2002.

The Falconets have been drawn in Group F alongside Spain, China PR and Paraguay. Nigeria are scheduled to open their campaign against Spain on September 7, before facing China PR on September 10 and Paraguay on September 13.

The tournament will be hosted by Poland from September 5 to 27, with Nigeria hoping to improve on previous performances after finishing as runners-up in 2010 and 2014 and reaching the semi-finals in 2012.

For now, uncertainty remains over Igbokwe’s participation, although there has been no official confirmation that she has been denied a visa. If the reported issue is resolved before the team’s final travel arrangements, the captain could still join her teammates in Poland.

However, should she remain unavailable, the coaching staff may have to appoint another player to lead the Falconets during their World Cup campaign.
