In a video interview with Awikonko TV Live on Sunday, Oba Adebayo Fatoba disclosed that the community had sought permission from the state police to address persistent attacks by herders in the region. He emphasized that the security committee, comprising 25 communities in Ikole Local Government Area, was formed several years ago to assist in addressing the challenges posed by the influx of Fulani herders.
Oba Fatoba, who was the chairman of the committee, explained, “We volunteered to do it for Yoruba land.” He narrated that the attackers, armed with guns and machetes, ambushed him and his entourage between Aiyebode and Aiyedun communities. Despite facing a life-threatening situation, he managed to escape by using the car door to shield himself from an assailant attempting to strike him with a weapon.
Contrary to claims that he disappeared, Oba Fatoba clarified, “I want them to know that it is a lie. I ran to the security guards we put in that area because it had been a hotspot. I wanted to get to them.” He revealed that he instructed the security guard to fire into the air, but the firearm jammed, and the guards were too fearful to approach for a rescue operation.
The traditional ruler highlighted that his driver also escaped unharmed because the gunmen focused solely on obtaining the car key. Dispelling notions of spiritual intervention, he asserted, “They killed the others; we didn’t escape with the aid of spiritual power.” Oba Fatoba expressed gratitude for divine protection, emphasizing that the attack was unexpected and that he lost his phone during the ordeal.
The Ekiti State Police Command subsequently paraded one Alhaji Baboga on Sunday, alleging his involvement in the killing of the two traditional rulers. The incident has sparked concerns about the escalating insecurity in the country, particularly with the rising number of kidnappings across different regions.
