Lagos Deputy Governor Decries ‘Crazy’ Electricity Bills from Eko Disco....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, has raised serious concerns over the excessive estimated billing practices by electricity distribution companies, citing a shocking ₦29 million electricity bill issued this month by Eko Electricity Distribution Company (Eko Disco) for his State House residence.

Just a month earlier, the bill was ₦2.7 million. Describing the dramatic spike as “crazy,” Dr. Hamzat revealed that despite purchasing a prepaid meter to avoid inflated charges, the inability to convert the property to the metered system has continued to pose a problem.

He shared this experience during a Round Table Meeting and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Lagos State Government and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA). The event, organized by the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, marked the beginning of a new power project targeting rural electrification across the state.

The REA has already identified several communities in Epe, Badagry, Ojo, Amuwo-Odofin, and beyond for the rollout. The project will be jointly funded by the Federal Government (60%), Lagos State Government (30%), and private stakeholders (10%).

Dr. Hamzat highlighted his personal ordeal with estimated billing to emphasize the urgency of transitioning to more reliable and transparent metering systems under the new renewable electricity initiative.

“Last month at the State House, our electricity bill was ₦2.7 million. This month, Eko Disco sent us a ₦29 million bill. It’s insane,” he said. “We’ve bought a meter to avoid these outrageous bills, but converting to a metered system is still a major issue.”

He also shared another troubling case from Surulere:
“In Oke Aguda, Surulere, someone told me he pays ₦2 million in annual rent, but EKEDC billed him ₦2.8 million for electricity. That’s unacceptable. Our people are suffering under the weight of these inflated estimated bills.”
