Amid tensions in some traditionally volatile constituencies, the Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a warning to Nigerians participating in the elections, urging them to conduct themselves appropriately during and after the exercises in the affected states. The DSS emphasized the need for contending parties to avoid actions that could lead to a breakdown of law and order.

Simultaneously, the DSS urged politicians and their supporters to adhere to the electoral act and procedures. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun ordered the restriction of all forms of vehicular movement on roads, waterways, and other transportation modes from 12 a.m. to 6 p.m. today in states where elections will be conducted. Exceptions include essential services such as Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials, electoral observers, accredited media, both foreign and domestic observers, ambulances responding to emergencies, and firefighters.

The affected states include Ebonyi, Yobe, Kebbi, Lagos, Ondo, Taraba, Benue, Borno, Kaduna, Plateau, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Cross River, Delta, Enugu, Jigawa, Katsina, Adamawa, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Kano, Nasarawa, Niger, Oyo, Sokoto, and Zamfara.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, assured of credible exercises and called on all stakeholders to support violence-free polls. The bye-elections will fill nine vacant seats, including two Senators, four members of the House of Representatives, and three members of State Assemblies in nine states.

Notable figures such as the immediate past Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr David Umahi, and Works Minister, as well as Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu and immediate past Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, resigned, leading to the need for bye-elections.

Yakubu stated that the re-run elections would take place at designated constituencies or polling units as ordered by the Election Appeal Tribunals. The elections will cover three Senatorial Districts, 17 Federal and 28 State Constituencies across 80 Local Government Areas, 575 Registration Areas/Wards, and 8,934 Polling Units involving 4,904,627 registered voters, with 4,613,291 Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) collected.

The DSS warned against dangerous acts in a statement by the Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications, Dr. Peter Afunanya. Beyond the elections, citizens were urged to be patriotic, loyal to the nation, and consider the country’s peace over personal or group interests. The statement also called on media, civil society, and community-based organizations to avoid divisive tendencies and fake narratives.

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) clarified why the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) would not participate in the Plateau re-run elections. The national body of IPAC, in a statement, distanced itself from its Plateau State chapter’s criticism of the PDP’s exclusion, emphasizing that the local chapter’s actions did not reflect decisions made at a higher level. IPAC mentioned that during a meeting in Abuja on December 18, 2024, it was agreed upon by all political parties, including the PDP, that a court ruling prevents the PDP from participating in the Plateau re-run, and this decision aims to ensure a fair and square game. The statement cautioned against actions that could incite violence or disrupt the fragile peace in Plateau State, considering the ongoing challenge to the court judgment.
