On Thursday, the Senate turned down a proposal to rename the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Nwosu’s honor. Speaking to News Central on Saturday, Momodu expressed his disappointment, pointing out that the senators opposing the motion failed to recognize that Moshood Abiola would not have been recognized as the winner of the June 12, 1993 election without Nwosu’s leadership in organizing and announcing the results.
Momodu emphasized that Nwosu had done everything expected of him during a challenging period. He criticized the current Senate, stating that the lawmakers today could never have dared the military regime as Nwosu did.
He remarked, “I am truly embarrassed by the current Senate. Many of them may not fully understand the historical significance, but the truth is that Professor Humphrey Nwosu did his job impeccably. His role was to organize the election, and he did so with great credibility. It was never his responsibility to annul or not annul; his job was to ensure the election took place, and it was widely regarded as the fairest in Nigeria’s history.”
Momodu questioned why the senators were opposed to Nwosu being honored, suggesting they failed to appreciate his contribution to the June 12 election and its aftermath. He added, “The reason everyone talks about June 12 today and acknowledges Abiola’s victory is because of the election Nwosu conducted. The same senators criticizing Nwosu are the ones unable to hold the government accountable today. They are demanding that Nwosu do what they could never have done under a military regime.”
Momodu also criticized the senators for being subservient to the current administration, claiming they were merely rubberstamping the president’s decisions. “These same people now have the audacity to criticize someone who performed his duties admirably,” he concluded.
