The meeting, focused on the recent decisions of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to exit the bloc, also examined Senegal’s electoral situation and emphasized the importance of regional cooperation.

Dr. Touray explained that the official notifications of withdrawal received on January 29 had broader implications requiring attention. The three countries cited grievances such as ECOWAS diverging from pan-African ideals, perceived foreign influence, a sense of abandonment in the fight against terrorism, and the imposition of alleged illegal sanctions.

He stated, “These claims have no real basis, and the hasty intent on withdrawal did not consider the conditions outlined in the 1993 ECOWAS Revised Treaty.” Additionally, the President expressed concern about Senegal’s electoral developments, including the repeal of a decree and the subsequent postponement of the presidential election, contrary to the initially scheduled date of December 15, 2024.

Dr. Touray highlighted the need to assess the implications of the withdrawals on the citizens of the concerned member states and the broader community. Memoranda addressing these issues were prepared for consideration during the session.

Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, represented by Bankole Adeoye, AUC’s Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, stressed the urgency of addressing ECOWAS matters. Mahamat underscored the importance of dialogue between the three countries and ECOWAS, emphasizing that addressing challenges promptly is crucial for maintaining democratic gains and tackling complex issues in the Sahel region.
