England Recall Gibbs-White As Cole Palmer Withdraws From Nations League Squad

Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White has been recalled to the England squad after Cole Palmer withdrew from the team ahead of the upcoming Nations League fixtures.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Gibbs-White had initially missed out when England manager Thomas Tuchel announced his squad but has now been called up following Palmer’s withdrawal with a minor injury. The England Football Association confirmed the change, with Everton midfielder James Garner also joining the squad as a replacement for another withdrawal.

Gibbs-White was reportedly already close to selection, with Tuchel indicating before the squad changes that the 26-year-old had narrowly missed out on the initial group. His recall therefore gives him another opportunity to make an impression under the England manager.

Palmer had only recently returned to the England setup after being left out of the squad for the 2026 World Cup. However, the Chelsea forward has now withdrawn after suffering a minor injury and will miss England’s upcoming international fixtures.

The withdrawal comes after Palmer played the full 90 minutes in Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat to Brentford on Friday. He had made a strong start to the new Premier League campaign, recording four goals and two assists in seven appearances for the club.

Gibbs-White, meanwhile, returns to the England setup for the first time since October 2025, when he featured in a 3-0 friendly victory over Wales. The Forest captain has also made an encouraging start to the current Premier League season, recording one goal and two assists in five league appearances.

England will begin their Nations League campaign against reigning world champions Spain at Wembley on September 26 before travelling to face the Czech Republic on September 29. Tuchel’s side will then take on Croatia in Rijeka on October 3 before hosting the Czech Republic again on October 6.

Gibbs-White’s return comes as England deal with several squad changes. Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo, along with Arsenal’s Declan Rice and Newcastle United’s Tino Livramento, have also withdrawn from the squad because of injury concerns.

The latest changes give Gibbs-White another opportunity to establish himself in Tuchel’s plans as England prepare for a demanding series of Nations League matches.
