The meeting, held at Wells Carlton Hotel in Abuja, included the presence of Ahmadu Fintiri, the governor of Adamawa state, who accompanied Obaseki.

Reconciliation Move Amidst Fierce Competition

Obaseki’s diplomatic maneuver comes against the backdrop of heightened political tensions, particularly with the formidable opposition posed by Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, a former member of the House of Representatives and the preferred candidate of Dan Orbih, a key ally of Wike in Edo state. Additionally, the current deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, presents a significant challenge in the political arena.

With Asue Ighodalo vying for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship ticket in the upcoming February 22, 2024 primary election, Obaseki’s peace initiatives are strategically motivated to address the complexities of the political landscape.

During the meeting, Obaseki reportedly sought reconciliation and extended apologies for any previous misunderstandings between him and Wike. As part of the diplomatic proposal, Ighodalo, the aspirant seeking PDP’s governorship ticket, expressed readiness to select Ogbeide-Ihama as his running mate.

However, Wike, known for his assertive stance, made it clear to Obaseki that he would only consider engaging in discussions if a “level-playing field” is established, ensuring fairness in the primary election process. Sources familiar with the matter conveyed Wike’s insistence on creating an environment where the most acceptable candidate can emerge victorious.

Historical Context of Strained Relations

The rift between Obaseki and Wike dates back to 2020 when Obaseki, after defecting from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP, secured the party’s governorship ticket for his second term. Obaseki’s fallout with Adams Oshiomhole and the subsequent support for Ize Iyamu by Oshiomhole in the 2020 governorship election marked a turning point in Obaseki and Wike’s alliance.

The strains in their relationship further deepened during the PDP presidential primary for the 2023 general election when Obaseki endorsed Abubakar Atiku against Wike. Following Atiku’s controversial victory in the primary, Wike, now officially a minister in the APC government led by President Bola Tinubu, led a group of governors known as G5 to work against the PDP’s chosen candidate.

Obaseki’s recent diplomatic efforts signify a strategic attempt to mend fences and secure crucial support ahead of the Edo state governorship primary, underscoring the complex interplay of alliances and rivalries in Nigerian politics. The outcome of these diplomatic maneuvers will undoubtedly shape the trajectory of the upcoming elections.
