Falana Demands Justice Following Stampede Tragedy Claiming Seven Lives At Customs Office....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Prominent human rights lawyer and activist, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), has called for compensation from the Nigeria Customs Service to the families of seven individuals who tragically lost their lives in a stampede during the sale of discounted rice at the Customs office in Lagos.

The Nigeria Customs had initiated the sale of 25kg rice bags at the cost of N10,000, responding to a directive from President Bola Tinubu to offer seized rice at a reduced price to alleviate the food crisis in the country.

Regrettably, the sale on February 23 resulted in a stampede at the Customs Zonal Headquarters in Yaba, Lagos, leading to the immediate suspension of the low-cost rice distribution.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Falana expressed disappointment that the Customs authorities had not yet identified and consoled the families of the victims. He asserted that the Nigeria Customs Service must bear full responsibility for the incident.

Falana emphasized that, given the high demand and low cost of the rice, it should have been anticipated that the Customs Zonal Headquarters would struggle to handle the crowd. He urged the NCS to promptly identify and compensate the bereaved families, stressing that failure to do so might lead to legal action.

While urging the NCS to lift the suspension on the sale of the remaining rice bags, Falana recommended a more organized distribution through local government councils to prevent further stampedes.

In the event that the authorities disregard his advice, Falana warned of potential legal action to enforce the fundamental right to life for each deceased person, as guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights.

The senior lawyer urged a swift resolution to prevent the recurrence of such incidents and ensure a smoother distribution process.
