Dr. Wigwe, who was born at Island Maternity Hospital in Lagos on August 15, 1966, met his untimely end on February 9, 2024, in California. During the posthumous birthday observance, his aged parents, Pastor Stella and Pastor Shyngle Wigwe, penned a heartfelt letter to their son, expressing the deep void his absence has left. They described Herbert as an “extraordinary and remarkable son” and found solace only in the belief that God alone can heal their broken hearts. The depth of their sorrow is palpable, reflecting the immense pain of losing a child.
Herbert’s birth coincided with a pivotal era in Nigeria’s political history. The Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had previously pledged during a tribute event at the Eko Convention Center to immortalize Herbert on Lagos Island, acknowledging the historic significance of the location. This pledge resonated with many, emphasizing the importance of honoring Herbert’s legacy in a place rich with historical and cultural significance.
Lagos Island, known for its vibrant history and cultural melting pot, was where freed Brazilian slaves settled and where early Nigerian political figures began their careers. The governor’s promise to create a memorial there highlights the historic importance of the location.
Herbert’s younger brother, Emeka, returned from the U.S. to support his parents and manage family activities on this memorial day. He expressed the profound sense of loss, stating, “It feels as though a piece of the world has been taken with you, leaving a void that can never be filled.”
From Access Bank, where Herbert’s legacy is deeply felt, Company Secretary Sunday Ekwochi issued a tribute, acknowledging the lasting impact Herbert had on the organization and its people. I also honored Herbert through a poem, reflecting on his leadership, wisdom, and kindness.
As the day concluded, it was noted that despite the significance of the occasion, the Lagos governor’s absence was felt, casting a shadow over the otherwise heartfelt celebrations.
