Farotimi Defends Afe Babalola Against Corruption Claims, Upholding Legacy Of Justice

Speaking at the 21st Annual Chief Gani Fawehinmi Lecture held at Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, Fawehinmi-Biobaku described Farotimi’s claims as “unfounded accusations” aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the renowned legal luminary.
Dele Farotimi, in his book Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, alleged that Afe Babalola used his influence to corrupt the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
However, Fawehinmi-Biobaku dismissed these allegations, asserting that they not only defame Babalola but also threaten the sanctity of the Supreme Court and the integrity of the judiciary as a whole.
She stated, “I seek the permission of this esteemed gathering to recall what the former Emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie, once said: ‘Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who should have acted, the indifference of those who should have known better, and the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most that has allowed evil to triumph.’
“Recent publications like Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System by Mr. Dele Farotimi epitomize this disturbing trend. The author attacks not only Aare Afe Babalola but also undermines the integrity of the Supreme Court and the judiciary at large.
“The basis of his critique is the case of Major Muritala Gbadamosi Eletu & Ors v. H.R.H. Oba Tijani Akinloye & Ors (2013) 15 NWLR (Pt. 1378) 443. While constructive criticism for reform is welcomed, it is vital to differentiate between genuine calls for improvement and baseless accusations that erode public confidence.
“As we celebrate the ideals of Fawehinmism and honor the legacy of Chief Gani Fawehinmi, let us reaffirm our dedication to defending the judiciary and its stalwarts. Aare Afe Babalola’s achievements reflect that greatness is achieved through steadfast dedication, integrity, and service to humanity.
“Let us resist the temptation to allow false narratives to overshadow the significant contributions of individuals like Aare Afe Babalola. Instead, let us celebrate their achievements and draw inspiration from their lives to build a future where justice and truth prevail.”
