Amiola urged residents to adopt fire prevention measures, particularly in markets, to mitigate the risk of fire outbreaks. He announced a ban on sleeping in markets across the FCT, with ministerial support allowing the fire service to seal off non-compliant markets and plazas. “Market managers have been instructed to ensure that traders leave the premises immediately after trading hours,” he stated. Additionally, he emphasized the need for market managers to keep access roads clear, prohibiting the display of goods or makeshift shops that obstruct these routes.
He also called on motorists to yield the right of way to fire trucks during emergencies, reiterating the agency’s commitment to prompt responses to fire outbreaks. He commended the FCT Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike, for his support in safeguarding lives and property within the territory.
Regarding dry season fire prevention, Amiola revealed that the FCT Fire Service has begun educating schoolchildren about fire safety, with plans to have them share this knowledge with their peers. Fire Safety Week is scheduled from October 7 to 11, during which the service will conduct fire prevention activities throughout the FCT.
The FCT Administration announced plans to launch a Fire Emergency Monitoring Gateway on September 29, aiming to reduce fire incidents ahead of the harmattan season. The region has seen a troubling increase in fires, especially in open markets, causing significant property damage and affecting livelihoods. Recently, around 40 shops in the Kaura Modern Market, Abuja, were destroyed by fire.
