The Federal Government has called upon the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) for a critical session. The meeting is slated to take place on Thursday at the office of the Minister of Education, Prof. Mamman Tahir.
Earlier reports from Naija News highlighted SSANU and NASU’s threat to shut down universities on July 4 due to the government’s failure to pay their withheld salaries for four months. The Joint Action Committee (JAC), comprising both unions, issued a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government demanding payment.
While the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) received their owed salaries, SSANU and NASU, along with two other unions, were left waiting. The Federal Government had enforced the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy during previous strikes, affecting all unions.
Despite presidential directives, SSANU and NASU members continued to await their salaries, prompting the Federal Government’s latest move. Minister of Education Prof. Mamman assured that all affected unions would be included in the payment process upon taking office.
In response to SSANU and NASU’s renewed strike threat, the government called an urgent meeting set for 1 pm Thursday, aimed at preventing the impending strike. “The Minister of Education has invited SSANU and NASU to discuss persuading us against striking. We will attend, and later meet with the Minister of State for Labour and Employment at 3 pm,” a source informed the Daily Post.
JAC had initially planned to convene at 10 am to assess the government’s response to their demands and discuss potential indefinite strike action if payment remains outstanding.
