Lawal explained that the restoration initiative is part of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project, which employs Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for integrated catchment management. The project aims to tackle key environmental challenges affecting the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
“The ACReSAL project is centered on sustainable, climate-resilient practices. By using GIS for integrated catchment management, we are addressing critical environmental issues across the northern region,” Lawal said.
The project’s objectives include restoring 1 million hectares of degraded land by 2028, reducing poverty, and improving food security through climate-smart agricultural practices. Additionally, the project focuses on watershed management, land restoration, and building community resilience.
Lawal emphasized that ACReSAL reflects Nigeria’s commitment to combating climate change, promoting sustainable development, and providing local communities with innovative tools for long-term environmental health and resilience.
He assured that Nigeria remains dedicated to upholding best environmental practices to safeguard the planet for future generations.
