This initiative, known as the Nigeria Artificial Intelligence Research Scheme, has been introduced to promote the integration of AI applications for economic growth.

Dr. Tijani stated, ‘We have launched the Nigeria Artificial Intelligence Research Scheme to provide funding to 45 consortia of startups and researchers, enabling them to explore opportunities for further development and to establish a sustainable AI ecosystem within Nigeria.’

Our goal is to establish a solid foundation for our ministry’s endeavors in driving innovation, enhancing productivity in critical sectors, and positioning Nigeria as a global hub for AI technology application.’

The scheme’s website indicates that it is focusing on several key areas, including Agriculture, Education and Workforce, Finance, Governance, Healthcare, Utility, and Sustainability.

Applicants must form a consortium that includes a startup or technology company, a Nigerian university researcher, or a foreign researcher, in order to qualify for the grant, among other eligibility criteria outlined by the Ministry.

The application period commences on October 13, 2023, and concludes on November 15, 2023. The Ministry has stipulated that all applications must be submitted through the designated online channel provided.

A panel of AI experts will evaluate the proposals, and shortlisted applicants will receive notifications via email and be invited for interviews.”
