FIRS Rejects Proposed Extra Tax For Child Online Protection Bill Financing....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) strongly opposed the proposal for increased taxes and charges on business owners to generate funds for the Child’s Online Access Protection Bill. Mr. Zacch Adedeji, the FIRS Chairman, conveyed this stance through Mr. Mathew Osanekwu during a session with the House Committee on Justice in Abuja on Tuesday.

The committee, conducting a public hearing on the Child Online Access Protection Bill 2023, addresses issues such as online violence against Nigerian children and related concerns. Adedeji emphasized that the FIRS, having already been assigned a revenue target, advocates for funding the bill’s enactment through appropriation rather than imposing additional taxation.

Expressing concerns about the potential imposition of a levy, Adedeji highlighted that there are already eight existing levies in place. He suggested that the bill’s funding should be incorporated into the government’s budgetary allocations, aligning with FIRS’s role in revenue collection for the government.
