Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has warned that President Bola Tinubu risks losing the 2027 election if he fails to address the grievances of the Northern region.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In recent weeks, opposition to Tinubu’s re-election bid has intensified, with Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, the Arewa Consultative Forum, and several Northern political figures expressing discontent. The situation worsened after APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje urged Northern politicians to abandon any presidential ambitions for 2027, sparking further backlash.

Speaking in an interview with Punch, Lawal stated that unless Tinubu takes decisive action to alleviate the worsening economic hardship—particularly in the North—and listens to public concerns, he may struggle to secure another term.

The former Tinubu ally, now a vocal critic, claimed that the North would not forgive the president for the economic distress caused by his policies.

He said, “Tinubu must implement policies that genuinely tackle poverty. His current policies are plunging Nigerians, especially Northerners, into suffering. Instead of listening to advice, his administration unleashes attack dogs on critics, making dissent a crime in the North. Many young people expressing their frustrations publicly are being arrested, further fueling discontent.”

Lawal argued that if Tinubu were to enact policies that improve Nigerians’ lives, he would receive widespread support, regardless of how he came into power. However, he warned that the North has a history of uniting behind a consensus in major elections, making financial inducements ineffective.

“If Tinubu changes course and Nigerians are happy, we will commend him. But right now, he is pushing people into deeper hardship,” he said.

Reflecting on past elections, Lawal suggested that Northern leaders could replicate the strategy used to oust former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015. He noted that even if vast sums of money are spent to influence voters, history has shown that the North can still reject a candidate when it reaches a collective decision.
