The incident comes amid one of South Korea’s most devastating wildfire outbreaks, with fire departments working tirelessly to bring the crisis under control.
The wildfires have already claimed at least 18 lives, making it one of the country’s worst fire disasters. Acting President Han Duck-soo confirmed the death toll, describing the destruction as “unprecedented.”
Emergency responders have been working around the clock to contain the fires, which have ravaged large areas, including regions near cultural heritage sites.
Authorities scrambled to safeguard key landmarks, such as Bongjeong Temple in Andong, a UNESCO-listed site. Firefighters worked to evacuate valuable artifacts, including Buddha statues, transporting them to safety before the flames could reach the historic temple.
