These erstwhile militants were assured of rehabilitation and the opportunity to reintegrate into society as law-abiding citizens.
Usman Tar, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security in Borno State, noted that the “biometrics registration” process for these repentant members recommenced after the protest.
Tar stated, “With the restoration of normalcy, officials of the Borno State Government resumed the biometrics data capture of former Boko Haram insurgents on Friday. A total of 6,900 ex-insurgents are being processed under the comprehensive Disarmament, Demobilisation, Deradicalisation, Rehabilitation, Reconciliation, and Reintegration (DDDRRR) framework, also known as the ‘Borno Model’.”
Due to a lapse in communication, individuals who were scheduled for data capture on a later date appeared on Friday, August 18, 2023, leading to confusion at the camp where the procedure was being conducted.
The Borno State government assured the public that the situation has been brought under control and normalcy has been reestablished at the biometric exercise venue.
This incident underscores the intricate challenge faced by authorities in reintegrating former combatants into communities that have endured years of attacks and kidnappings during a 13-year Islamist insurgency.
