Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, operating under the banner of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has cautioned about the potential of military intervention should diplomatic negotiations falter.
To advance diplomatic efforts, Tinubu appointed a delegation led by former Nigerian leader Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar to engage with the junta in Niamey.
Regrettably, the junta declined the scheduled meeting upon the delegation’s arrival.
Ahmad, in a recent television interview, shared insights from his visit to Niger. He revealed that the junta felt betrayed, particularly due to Nigeria’s abrupt suspension of electricity supply to Niger without allowing them to present their side.
According to Ahmad, “He (Tchiani) said it was under the heat of the anger that they reacted the way they did and asked for forgiveness repeatedly.”
He also underscored that at this juncture, it is not prudent for Nigeria to engage in hostilities against Niger as it would be tantamount to declaring war on itself.
Elaborating on the implications of a conflict involving ECOWAS, Ahmad emphasized, “Nigeria shares an extensive border with the Niger Republic, encompassing about seven northern states.
These regions share a common language, culture, and historical ties dating back a century. Waging war against Niger would be detrimental to Nigeria’s interests, firstly due to these shared connections.”
“Moreover,” Ahmad continued, “the porous nature of the northern borders would create challenges in patrolling and monitoring.
This situation could potentially exacerbate insurgency and provide a fertile ground for cross-border attacks by bandits.”
“Lastly, the current President is still within his initial 100 days in office. Engaging in a war of this nature would not align with the best interests of this administration.
Therefore, as religious leaders and patriotic individuals, we believe that contributing to national cohesion is our responsibility,” Ahmad concluded.
