Omolewa emphasized the need to enhance awareness and promote early testing and treatment for women, stating that these measures are crucial to preventing cancer from reaching fatal stages. She identified breast and cervical cancer as significant causes of death in Nigeria, asserting that a diagnosis is not a death sentence with the right information and approach.
She highlighted the importance of grassroots campaigns to provide hope to mothers and daughters. Her foundation has taken initiatives to raise awareness by partnering with Nollywood and seeking collaborations with other sectors. āThis is why we sponsored the movie Diamond in the Sky, inspired by my story and produced by Femi Adabayo and Kunle Afolayan,ā she noted.
Through the LEAH Foundation, established in 2016, she has launched a campaign that includes building a hospital for screening and treatment. āFor me, this is a calling and a ministry, which is why it has continued beyond my tenure as First Lady,ā she explained. Having lost close friends to cancer, she is deeply passionate about raising awareness and providing information on breast and cervical cancer among women and girls.
Omolewa mentioned that the Forum of First Ladies Against Cancer, composed of current and former governorsā wives, has been actively advocating for stronger efforts against cancer.
Nollywood actress Omowunmi Dada, who stars in Diamond in the Sky, emphasized the need for support systems for cancer survivors. āThose who survive often have access to such support,ā she said, encouraging parents to vaccinate their daughters against cervical cancer and urging women to undergo early testing.
The film has already attracted over 100,000 views in its first week, helping to raise awareness about cancer and its prevention.
