In response to these developments, Mr. Uwak emphasized his strong stance against military dictatorships, drawing on his experience as a former member of the Federal House of Representatives. He stated, “I understand the importance of democratic governance versus military rule.”
He further condemned the recent military coup in Gabon, along with similar actions that have occurred in other African nations such as Sudan, Tunisia, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Niger, and more. Uwak noted that these events have hindered the African Union’s efforts to promote democratic principles on the continent.
Mr. Uwak expressed his support for the actions taken by the African Union and international bodies against the junta in Gabon, which includes suspending the country.
Nevertheless, he urged African leaders to prioritize good governance and adhere to democratic principles in order to prevent military coups.
He pointed out that the resurgence of coups in Africa can be attributed to years of institutional failures, social injustices, flawed elections, impositions, and a lack of respect for democratic norms.
Uwak emphasized that for Africa to make progress and reduce poverty among its people, it must establish a democracy that fosters development and uplifts the majority of its population.
