Former Minister Defends Jonathan’s Presidency: He Wasn’t Weak Just Compassionate Says Abdullahi

Former Minister Bolaji Abdullahi has asserted that former President Goodluck Jonathan fell prey to the political machinations surrounding him, denying the characterization of Jonathan as a weak and inept leader. Abdullahi expressed these views during the presentation of his book titled “On a Platter of Gold: How Jonathan won and lost Nigeria,” held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State over the weekend.

According to Abdullahi, Jonathan’s post-2015 presidential election actions aimed to avert potential bloodshed in Nigeria. He emphasized that Jonathan’s governance was not dictatorial but adhered to constitutional principles.

Abdullahi further argued that Jonathan’s reluctance to inflict harm on people led some to misconstrue his actions as weakness. He stated, “President Jonathan was not weak or clueless in my experience. His patriotism was evident, yet he exercised caution in power usage.”

Acknowledging Jonathan’s understanding of presidential authority, Abdullahi recounted Jonathan’s belief that excessive power usage could lead to dictatorship. Abdullahi suggested that Jonathan’s aversion to causing harm might have been misinterpreted as weakness, especially amid political maneuvering during his tenure.

In Abdullahi’s view, Jonathan’s leadership was influenced by the political climate of his time. He speculated that if Jonathan were in power today, his approach might differ.
