This development follows the recent rejection by the constitutional court of an attempt to overturn a lower court’s ruling that deemed Zuma’s earlier release on medical parole as illegal. Zuma’s initial arrest two years ago sparked violent protests across South Africa, resulting in the loss of more than 300 lives. The former president, now 81 years old, had been sentenced to 15 months of imprisonment for disobeying a court directive to participate in a corruption inquiry focused on high-level corruption that occurred during his nine-year presidency.

In July 2021, Zuma surrendered to authorities and was subsequently granted medical parole due to his health condition just two months later. Throughout this period, Zuma has consistently denied all allegations of corruption leveled against him.
