Four Dead, Six Missing After Boat Capsizes In Kano

A tragic canoe accident in Kauranmata village, Madobi Local Government Area of Kano State, has resulted in the deaths of four people. The canoe capsized, leading to the deaths of Maryam Jibrin, Yusuf Galinja, Kabiru Muhammad, and Safiyanu Musa. Five individuals, including the canoe driver and a nursing mother, were rescued. However, the child of the nursing mother remains missing.

Search and rescue efforts for six additional missing passengers were ongoing at the time of this report. Madobi local government information officer, Jamilu Mustapha Yakasai, confirmed that the bodies of the deceased were recovered and buried according to Islamic rites on Wednesday, August 21.

The interim chairman of Madobi local council, Alhaji Muhammad Sani Gora, visited Kauran Mata to offer condolences and support to the affected families. Gora assured that the council would provide all necessary assistance during this difficult time.

Resident Salisu Adamu Baure noted that this was the first fatal accident of its kind in the river, attributing it to overloading. The canoe was reportedly carrying two bags of rice and a motorcycle.

Ward head Ibrahim Lawan has called on the Kano State government and local officials to supply modern speed boats and life jackets to prevent future tragedies. Kano State Fire Service spokesman Saminu Abdullahi confirmed the incident and noted that the local councillor, Aminu Garba, had contacted the fire service immediately.
