Fresh Twist In Mohbad Saga As Family Seeks Postponement Of Liam’s DNA Test
The family of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has called for the postponement of the DNA sample collection scheduled for Saturday in Yaba, Lagos, over concerns about plans to send samples from his son, Liam, to an unidentified laboratory in the United States.
The family is demanding that the identity and location of the proposed American laboratory be disclosed before the exercise proceeds, insisting that the testing arrangement must be transparent and consistent with the existing court order.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the family head, Samuel Aloba, explained that a court order dated May 5, 2026, had designated the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre to conduct the paternity test.
The family consequently questioned whether the Lagos facility would carry out the actual examination or merely collect the samples before forwarding them to another laboratory abroad.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the family maintained that no party should unilaterally change the arrangement contained in an existing court order without first obtaining clarification from the court.
It requested the full name and address of the proposed US laboratory, evidence of its accreditation and professional competence, as well as comprehensive information about the procedures for collecting, preserving, transporting and analysing the samples.
The family also called for safeguards that would enable all parties to verify that the samples collected in Lagos were the same specimens eventually examined by the overseas laboratory.
Addressing suggestions that the laboratory’s identity could remain confidential and be disclosed only to the court, the family argued that confidentiality should not take precedence over transparency and accountability in a matter of such importance.
The family stressed that it was not opposed to conducting the DNA test but wanted assurances that the process would produce a reliable and credible result.
It expressed concern that inadequate safeguards could create opportunities for interference or manipulation, while clarifying that it was not claiming that the proposed process had already been compromised.
The statement also revisited previous concerns surrounding the handling of samples collected during the post-mortem examination following Mohbad’s death. The family questioned the role of the pathologist involved in the coroner’s inquest and claimed that its own findings indicated that the laboratory reportedly designated to receive the specimens had not received any sample bearing the singer’s name.
However, the family acknowledged that this was its account of the matter and had not been established by a court or independent investigation.
Reaffirming its support for a properly conducted paternity test, the family requested that Saturday’s sample collection be suspended until its concerns were addressed, all relevant parties were duly informed and further judicial directions were obtained where necessary.
It maintained that its priority was to ensure that the eventual DNA result emerged from a transparent, properly documented and verifiable process.
Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27. Following his death, the Lagos State Police Command established a 13-member special investigation team to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
