From ₦15m To Fuel Attendant: Lady Recounts Shocking Story Of Betting Winner Who Lost His Fortune
A Nigerian woman has recounted how her friend allegedly went from winning ₦15 million through sports betting to becoming broke and returning to work as a fuel attendant after losing his remaining money on bets.
According to the woman, her friend won the substantial amount last year and subsequently married his girlfriend, who was pregnant at the time.
She said the newlyweds moved into a three-bedroom apartment with an annual rent of ₦2.2 million. The man reportedly paid three years’ rent upfront, spending ₦6.6 million on accommodation.
The woman added that he also gave his wife ₦2 million to purchase baby supplies and other personal items, while the remaining funds were used to run the household. However, she said he continued betting with his money.
According to her account, the situation became worse last month after one of the man’s friends sent him a betting code described as a “very sure” option that could supposedly yield a ₦20 million payout.
She said the man withdrew the ₦500,000 remaining in his account and staked the entire amount on the bet, only to lose the money.
The woman claimed that he subsequently borrowed another ₦200,000 to place another bet but lost that money as well, leaving him without funds.
With his financial situation deteriorating, the man reportedly approached his landlord and requested a refund for one year of the rent he had paid in advance.
However, according to the woman, the landlord declined the request and referred to the tenancy agreement, which reportedly stated that the rent was non-refundable.
She further revealed that the man has now returned to work as a fuel attendant at a filling station.
The account has sparked discussions about the risks associated with gambling, particularly the tendency to reinvest large winnings into further bets.
The incident has also renewed conversations about the importance of having a sustainable financial plan after receiving a major windfall, as substantial winnings can quickly disappear when repeatedly committed to gambling.
