Lady Fumes Over Traditional Wedding Expectations, Questions Family’s Role In Her Upbringing

A Nigerian lady has expressed frustration over traditional wedding expectations, questioning why she is expected to fulfil certain obligations to family members whom she claims played no significant role in her upbringing.

According to the woman, none of her relatives from her village contributed financially towards her education, upbringing or supported her family while she was growing up.

She said she finds it difficult to understand why the same relatives would still be expected to play a role in her marriage simply because of traditional customs.

The lady shared her concerns in a video, where she alleged that no member of her extended family had made any meaningful contribution towards her welfare or education.

She explained that despite their alleged absence during important stages of her life, tradition requires her to return to the family when she gets married and fulfil certain customary obligations.

The woman said she was particularly unhappy about the expectation that her bride price would be paid to members of the family and that she would also be required to provide traditional wedding items for them.

She questioned the rationale behind celebrating with relatives who, according to her, were not involved in supporting her while she was growing up.

The lady further expressed frustration over the idea of having to participate in traditional activities involving such family members, saying the situation had left her upset.

Her comments have sparked discussions online, with some people sympathising with her concerns about family expectations and others pointing out that traditional marriage rites are often viewed as cultural practices involving extended families rather than direct financial compensation for raising the bride.
