Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has asserted that complaints about the recent tariff increase for Band A customers are primarily coming from Nigerians who have not been paying their electricity bills……….CONTINUE READING
Speaking at the 8th Africa Energy Marketplace forum in Abuja, Adelabu explained that the new tariff has actually reduced the energy costs for Band A consumers by 30 to 40 percent.
Adelabu emphasized that the tariff hike is not intended to burden Nigerians or exacerbate the economic situation worsened by high inflation. He refuted claims that the new tariff has increased production costs for manufacturers, which supposedly leads to higher prices for goods and services.
The Minister pointed out that Band A customers have seen significant reductions in their spending on generator servicing, diesel, and petroleum due to the tariff adjustment. He argued that Nigeria, with its abundant resources such as sun, water, and gas, should not suffer from electricity shortages. He lamented the sector’s inefficiencies over the past 60 years.
“The electricity tariff was not designed to impoverish Nigerians or worsen the economic hardships caused by high inflation and the devaluation of the naira. Instead, it aims to alleviate the people’s suffering,” Adelabu stated.
He added, “Those in Band A, if they do the math, will find that their total energy costs, including both grid supply and generator expenses, have decreased by 30 to 40 percent. This is a fact we can confirm as electricity consumers ourselves. While Band A bills may have increased, the savings on generator-related expenses have more than offset this rise.”
Adelabu dismissed the notion that the new tariff would lead to higher production costs and prices for goods, highlighting that manufacturers in Band A should now benefit from lower energy costs. He invited stakeholders to compare notes with practical examples to validate this claim.
