Additionally, the House has urged the Federal Government to implement cost-cutting measures to reduce other non-debt recurring expenses. The Committee on Legislative Compliance has been tasked with ensuring the implementation of these measures.
The decision to take these actions was made during a plenary session on Thursday, following the adoption of a motion titled “Need to Investigate the Nationās Increasing Non-Debt Recurrent Expenditure,” which was presented by Hon. Ademorin Kuye from Lagos.
Kuye pointed out that over a 13-year period, federal government personnel expenses, pensions, and other non-debt recurring expenditures have risen by 241%, increasing from N2.4 trillion in 2011 to N8.27 trillion in 2023.
He also highlighted that the total non-debt expenditure from 2011 to 2023 amounts to N51.97 trillion, with N42.24 trillion spent from 2015 to the present, constituting 81.8% of the total expenditures during the period.
Kuye emphasized that the country’s revenue has been significantly impacted by debt servicing obligations, leaving limited resources for recurring expenditures and necessitating government borrowing.
