Global Spotlight: VP Shettima Touches Down In New York For 80th UNGA

Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New York, United States, to stand in for President Bola Tinubu at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which begins on Monday and runs through September 28.

During the week-long session, Shettima will present Nigeria’s national statement at the high-level General Debate, unveil the country’s new Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement, and engage in bilateral meetings, roundtables, and side events.

Although President Tinubu was initially listed to address the assembly, the updated speakers’ schedule confirmed that Shettima will now deliver Nigeria’s position on Wednesday afternoon.

On arrival at John F. Kennedy International Airport, the Vice President was welcomed by Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Defence Badaru Abubakar, Nigeria’s Chargé d’Affaires at the Permanent Mission to the UN Samson Itegboje, as well as other senior officials including Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology Uche Nnaji, Nigeria’s Defence Attaché in New York Brig.-Gen. Edward Koleoso, and Defence Attaché in Washington Group Capt. Sani Kalgo.

Nigeria’s Priorities at UNGA 80
Foreign Minister Tuggar said Nigeria’s focus at this year’s UNGA includes advocating for a United Nations Global Convention on Taxation and pushing for Africa’s permanent representation on the UN Security Council, in line with the Ezulwini Consensus and Sirte Declaration.

“This is an area where Nigeria continues to demonstrate leadership,” Tuggar noted, adding that the country will also highlight its peacekeeping record and weigh in on ongoing conflicts in Gaza, Eastern Congo, and Sudan.

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, also present in New York, said Nigeria’s engagement at the UNGA would showcase its economic strength.
“We are looking at strategic sectors such as solid minerals, agriculture, and skills-based education. The Vice President’s presentation will further project Nigeria as Africa’s leading economy,” he said.

Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Olajumoke Oduwole, disclosed that Nigeria will host an Investment Day on Monday to attract foreign investors, spotlighting opportunities in solid minerals, telecommunications, and technology.

Shettima is also expected to participate in the African Union Peace and Security Council meeting and hold talks with world leaders, including the Prime Minister of Sudan, as part of his diplomatic engagements at UNGA 80.
