Speaking at the Independence Day Anniversary Church Service at Maria Assumpta Cathedral in Owerri, Uzodinma expressed gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate independence amid relative peace and unity, reflecting the belief that “Nigeria is a nation whose God is Lord.” He acknowledged the challenges faced across the country but maintained that Nigeria has not experienced full-scale war.

The governor referenced recent flooding as a significant challenge, but he remained optimistic, stating, “With God, all things are possible.” He highlighted three reasons for praise: progress made since independence, the gift of life that allows Nigerians to remain united, and the prevailing relative peace despite ongoing challenges.

Uzodinma encouraged Nigerians to express gratitude in all situations, urging a shift from “lamentation to celebration and from dismay to hope.” He commended the Church for its role in the nation and called on religious leaders to continue praying for Nigeria and Imo State.

While acknowledging the shortcomings of past and present leadership, he emphasized that hope and light exist for the country’s future. He called for collective prayers to maintain peace and unity.

Uzodinma also urged citizens to reflect on their actions regarding the destruction of government property, attacks on security personnel, and obstruction of government initiatives, underscoring that true patriotism rejects such behaviors.

In response to the Archbishop’s request about gratuity payments, the governor committed to continuing the payments but urged Church leaders to pray against fraudulent activities that hinder the verification process.

Earlier, Catholic Archbishop of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province, Most Revd. Dr. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, acknowledged God’s presence in keeping Nigeria united through challenges. He expressed hope for a brighter future and praised the governor’s efforts in maintaining peace, fighting insecurity, and promoting infrastructural development.

Fr. Gerald Njoku, representing the Archbishop, requested that the governor persist with gratuity payments for pensioners and urged the speedy completion of the ongoing flyover project at the Assumpta roundabout.
