However, during a press conference in Makurdi on Thursday, the PDP’s publicity secretary, Bemgba Iortyom, expressed the party’s apprehension regarding increasing claims of duplicated contractual payments and substantial expenses attributed to Alia.
Iortyom lamented that numerous media outlets had disseminated stories suggesting that the governor had misused over N46 billion for questionable purposes.
According to him, these reports detailed expenditures by Alia, reaching tens of billions of naira, indicating possible duplication of contracts, refurbishment of “palliative” vehicles, travel costs, hotel stays, vehicle acquisitions, government house operational expenses, and hosting guests, among other miscellaneous purposes.
He stated, “The allegations of dubious use of public funds by Governor Alia, as reported by various media sources, encompass a period between May 29 and September 30, 2023, during which Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State allegedly expended over N46 billion on various purposes.
These include expenditures related to duplicated contracts, his travels, vehicle acquisitions, hotel bills, government house operational costs, etc.”
Iortyom cautioned Governor Alia against maintaining silence on these significant allegations, emphasizing that ignoring them would imply acceptance of guilt.
He asserted that it is the right of the people of Benue to be informed about the utilization of their collective resources, and the government must not deny them this right.
