In a statement issued by the party’s spokesperson, Yusuf Idris, the APC expressed concern that the security situation has significantly deteriorated under Lawal’s leadership.

The party accused the governor of failing to honour his campaign pledge to eliminate banditry within his first three months in office. Idris claimed that Lawal has abandoned his responsibilities, leaving citizens vulnerable to frequent attacks by armed groups.

“Governor Lawal appears to be heading towards his second year in office with an unfulfilled promise he boldly made during his 2023 campaign,” Idris stated.

He also accused the governor of lacking seriousness in tackling the crisis, alleging that Lawal frequently leaves the state during times of turmoil, showing little concern or leadership.

Idris refuted claims made by the governor’s administration that victims of bandit attacks receive free medical care in state hospitals, stating that many are denied treatment due to financial constraints.

“I visited Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital in Gusau myself, and victims were turned away because they couldn’t afford the fees,” he added.

In response, the governor’s Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Mustafa Kaura, rejected the APC’s accusations, calling them “baseless and misleading.”

Kaura defended Governor Lawal’s approach to security, asserting that notable progress has been achieved since the new administration took office.

“Under Governor Matawalle, several towns were abandoned. Now, residents are returning to their homes thanks to improved security,” Kaura said.

He cited the recruitment of civilian security volunteers and increased security funding as part of the administration’s efforts to combat banditry.

Kaura also reminded the APC that its member and former Zamfara governor, Bello Matawalle, now serves as the Minister of Defence and shares in the national responsibility to ensure security.

He accused the APC of exploiting the security situation for political gain, urging them to support the state’s peace-building initiatives instead of shifting blame.

“It’s irresponsible for the APC to put the entire burden on Governor Lawal when they know he doesn’t control the security forces,” Kaura concluded.
