Speaking in an interview with Arise News on Monday, the former APC chieftain warned that urging one candidate to step down for another could weaken the opposition’s ability to effectively challenge the ruling party.
“In politics, candidates have the right to engage in their own private negotiations. But in my view, anyone who believes they are qualified to lead should willingly subject themselves to a free and fair primary election. The rigors of the primaries will reveal who truly has the strength and capacity to face the tougher general election,” Okonkwo said.
He emphasized that he is not among those trying to pressure any candidate into stepping aside.
“That decision should solely lie with the individual. I would not want anyone later claiming they were forced to withdraw from a race they were passionate about. Whatever discussions Atiku and Obi are having should remain between them. As far as I’m concerned, anyone seeking the presidency should step forward and let the people decide,” he concluded.
