Governor Makinde appointed a new Alaafin of Oyo and presented the staff of office on Monday, despite the Oyomesi’s recommendation of Prince Lukman Gbadegesin.
In a letter addressed to the Governor and signed by their legal representative, Adekunle Sobaloju SAN, the Oyomesi criticized Makinde’s public statements, stating that they cast unwarranted aspersions on their integrity.
The Oyomesi challenged Governor Makinde to present any evidence against them in court, urging him to avoid the “campaign of calumny” against their reputation.
The kingmakers emphasized their dedication to upholding the traditions and customs of the Oyo Kingdom, asserting that public trials of their character are inappropriate and unbecoming of the office of the Governor.
The letter read, “While we respect Your Excellency’s right to defend your actions in court, the appropriate forum for presenting evidence and arguments is in court. We remind Your Excellency that the Oyomesi have refrained from engaging in public disputes and regard this continued public criticism as deeply disheartening.”
The Oyomesi further urged Governor Makinde to avoid resorting to the court of public opinion or media trials to validate recent actions, especially when there is no substantiated evidence.
“Publicly maligning the Oyomesi, who are custodians of tradition and highly respected in the Oyo Kingdom, not only damages their reputation but also undermines the judicial process,” the letter concluded.
