A total of 39 inmates, previously convicted across custodial centers in Gombe State, have received pardons in a New Year’s announcement by Governor Muhammadu Yahaya. Out of these, 26 are set to be released unconditionally, while the remaining 13 will see their sentences shortened. The decision was made following the recommendation of the state advisory council on the prerogative of mercy. During the statewide broadcast, Governor Yahaya addressed the economic challenges resulting from the removal of the fuel subsidy, acknowledging the hardship faced by Nigerians. He described the removal as a painful yet necessary decision. The governor highlighted the implementation of various policies over the past six months, including wage grants to civil servants, food and agricultural support, and other palliative measures aimed at mitigating the economic impact. The first phase of a food palliative intervention, initiated in August 2023, targeted 420,000 vulnerable individuals.
Governor Yahaya announced the commencement of the second phase of the palliative food distribution program, set to benefit approximately 90,000 beneficiaries across the state. A committee, chaired by the Deputy Governor and inclusive of various stakeholders, has been established to oversee this initiative. Commending the resilience and understanding of the people during challenging times, the governor expressed confidence in facing tougher challenges in 2024.
Looking ahead, Governor Yahaya outlined the focus of his administration for 2024, emphasizing the commitment to building a Gombe State that ensures inclusivity. He referred to the recently passed 2024 budget as the “budget of continuity and consolidation.” The administration plans to continue investing in key areas such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, job creation, peace, and security. Governor Yahaya expressed optimism that, through the strategic allocation of resources and sustained efforts, Gombe State would progress on the path of sustainable development and inclusivity.
